Weed is illegal in Bali. One legal system applies across the island: Indonesia's national narcotics law. Cannabis, or ganja, is classified as a Category I narcotic. Possessing, using, buying, selling, growing, transporting or importing it can lead to arrest, imprisonment, heavy fines, deportation and immigration restrictions.

Bali Cannabis Laws at a Glance

Activity Legal in Bali?
Recreational marijuana use No
Possessing cannabis No
Buying or selling weed No
Growing cannabis No
Bringing weed through Bali airport No
Cannabis edibles or vape products No
CBD or THC products No
Medical marijuana with a foreign prescription No

Indonesian authorities and official travel guidance treat marijuana, hash, cannabis edibles, CBD and THC products as illegal. A medical prescription does not create an exception.

Does Bali Have Different Cannabis Rules From Indonesia?

No. Bali does not have a separate cannabis system. Indonesian national narcotics law applies across the island, including Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Ubud and Nusa Dua.

The Indonesian National Narcotics Agency identifies cannabis as a Narkotika Golongan I, or Category I narcotic, and states that its use is prohibited.

Can Tourists Use a Small Amount of Weed in Bali?

No. Tourists do not receive an exemption or a legal personal-use allowance. Official travel guidance warns that even small quantities can result in penalties far more severe than those commonly imposed in the United States.

Buying cannabis from a local seller is illegal too. In one published Bali immigration case, a foreign national was convicted after possessing a small amount of cannabis and later faced imprisonment and deportation.

Can You Bring CBD Oil, THC Gummies or a Cannabis Vape to Bali?

No. Do not bring them into Indonesia. Indonesian customs treats narcotics as prohibited passenger goods, and bringing illegal drugs into the country is a criminal offense. The rule can apply even when the product was legally purchased in another country.

This includes:

  • Cannabis flower and hash
  • THC gummies and other edibles
  • CBD oil and CBD capsules
  • THC vape cartridges
  • Cannabis-infused drinks
  • Cannabis extracts and concentrates
  • Prescription products containing cannabis compounds

A medical prescription from the United States or another country does not automatically make cannabis legal in Indonesia.

What Are the Penalties for Weed in Bali?

They can include heavy fines and long prison sentences. Serious trafficking, importing or distribution offenses can carry life imprisonment or the death penalty under Indonesia's narcotics framework.

Foreign visitors may also face:

  • Detention during criminal proceedings
  • Deportation after serving a sentence
  • Immigration bans or other restrictions
  • Confiscation of phones, luggage and other property
  • Difficulty obtaining Indonesian visas in the future

The charge and sentence depend on the substance, quantity, alleged conduct and the court's application of Indonesian law.

Bottom Line

Keep cannabis out of Bali. Do not buy or use weed locally, carry cannabis products through Ngurah Rai International Airport, or bring them from a country where they are legal. The same caution applies to CBD oil, THC gummies, cannabis vapes and prescription products containing cannabis compounds.

If you are arrested or detained, ask Indonesian authorities to notify your embassy or consulate and obtain local legal representation.
